Reiki, chakras and energy flows
Loosely translated, reiki means "life energy".
Practitioners believe that flows of energy exist both inside and outside of each human being. This energy must flow freely through the seven main energy centers of the body (chakras).
When the energy flow is interrupted for any reason, weakness, pain, or illness may result.
Debate continues over the true origins of this holistic therapy, though most believe it originated several thousands of years ago in the region of Tibet.
After falling into semi obscurity - at least from a Western perspective - the practice was "rediscovered" by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese educator. Following his death in 1894, other noted practitioners like Phyllis Lei Furumoto and Dr. Chujiro Hyashi, continued to use reiki in its various forms.
This alternative medicine therapy is used to improve sleep, decrease pain, and ease muscle tension. It shows particular effectiveness for chemotherapy patients, who have reported a significant decrease in nausea and pain.
Treatments usually last about one hour, and more than one treatment may be necessary.
During a session it is believed that energy passes from the practitioner's hands to the recipient, and that more energy will naturally flow where it's needed most.
This freeing of energy allows the body to heal itself naturally.
As you may imagine, traditional western medicine remains skeptical. I am not surprised, and let's just leave it at that, ok?
I will only say that when I spoke to those who tried it, most of them reported an increased sense of well-being and renewed spirit. Also, they reported decreased muscular discomfort and better sleep. The placebo effect? Perhaps.
But why knock it if it works for you?
