Meditation refers to a hightned mental state whose focus is on the mind itself.
The two most commonly used techniques involve (1)mindful, and (2)concentrative.
With the first, a person is fully aware of the sounds, thoughts and images that cross his or her mind.
With the second type, a person focuses either on her own breathing, image, or mantra.
Mantra refers to words that are spoken or sung in a repetitive manner.
In Japa Yoga, a type that originated in Hinduism, the repetition of a mantra is essential, while
Hatha Yoga also employs body postures to raise spiritual energy.
The technique has been successfully used to treat a variety of problems, including high blood pressure, pain, anxiety, and stress.
Many women also report an improvement of menopausal symptoms, especially hot flashes.
Generally speaking, it is a safe method to use for stress management.
Nevertheless, people who are unable to sit quietly for 20 minutes or so - such as those afflicted by ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), or those with respiratory problems, may not be able to use this type of alternative medicine. Some adjustments may be needed.
I personally deal with my own "issues" using a variety of strategies, and I encourage you to do the same. It's unlikely that one single method can provide you with a total "self care package", so feel free to experiment with the various tools provided on these pages. Use an eclectic approach!
As you become more comfortable and knowledgeable about the available options, you will eventually become your very own alchemist! A pinch of this, a little bit of that, stir and enjoy.
One last thing...I've been "looking around" trying to find some good resources on the topic, and believe I found one website that will provide you with all the information you may want. Please take a look at Dr. Ian Kerr's website by following the link below. I'm confident you will be quite pleased with his extensive professional knowledge of the subject.
