Marseille soap: Don't judge it by its appearance!
Curious about Marseille soap, also known as “the olive oil soap from France”? Then welcome to this page, where you can get acquainted with it!
This soap originated in France over 700 years ago. Today it continues to be sold in its original form.
What I mean by “its original form” is this: there is no additional milling or processing to make this soap harder and/or smoother. Further down you will read why it’s sometimes called ugly soap.
The Marseille soaps I offer at je Me Souvien are imported directly from France. To me this is important, as French law requires that any soap labeled “Marseille” must be made from a minimum of 72% vegetable oil. The first one (600g) is the 100% Marseille soap. The other Marseille (350g) contains essential oils of lavender, making it an excellent healer for burned or irritated skin
No two soap bars will look exactly alike. Why? Read on…
The newly made Marseille soap is very soft, wet with moisture. But as it dries, the moisture is absorbed by the packaging which, in turn, becomes stained and mottled. As this happens, the soap bars will sometimes stick together, and cutting them apart is then necessary.
Also, during the drying process the soap may lose its shape and change color. The color change is due to the natural process of oxidation and has no effect on its qualities. However, because no two bars or cubes will look alike, because of the color change, and because of the “deformed” shapes, Marseille is also known as the “ugly soap”.
Marseille has a neutral pH, it’s not allergenic, highly moisturizing, and fragrance free. ABSOLUTELY the best for dry skin and men love it also. I remember reading about someone’s uncle who was caught cutting a chunk off the cube so he could keep it for his own use!
I encourage you to give it a try. Look past its appearance - you know how the saying goes: “beauty is only skin deep”. Discover Marseille’s inner beauty. Then write back to me and tell me what you think. I’ve yet to receive a negative comment after all these years. Free shipping.
