How to increase metabolism. Simple, effective and safe tips to give it a boost.
Would you like to find out how to increase your metabolism in a safe, painless and effective way?
Then welcome to this page! Here I will briefly describe metabolism and then we’ll see how to increase it.
Remember that www.romancing-the-soap.com is not a scientific site. I admit that sometimes I have to go a little bit into the scientific sphere. However, I always try to keep it as simple as possible; if you don’t agree, let me know.
Therefore, I will not start mentioning functional groups, oxidative phosphorylation, nucleotides, etc. etc. Doing so might put you to sleep - I don’t want that!
Plainly stated, metabolisminvolves a sophisticated network of chemical reactions, where enzymes and hormones determine how efficiently you burn the fuel created by the food you eat.
Some of us believe that metabolism starts to slow down after the age of 30, others think it slows down around the age of 40 (I vote for age 40, not simply based on clinical evidence, but also from personal experience - sigh!). In fact, based on various studies, it looks like our metabolism decreases by approximately 5% for every 10 years after we hit the big “40”. (some studies report a 2% decrease every 10 years).
Most of us blame the process of aging for the extra pounds we begin to accumulate, and that is valid, but only to a point. There are some things which determine our metabolism. Some cannot be changed, I’m afraid. What are they?
Your gender. Males have higher metabolism, even while resting, than females. Unfair? Maybe, but generally speaking, males have a higher percentage of lean body mass. Muscle burns more effectively than fat.
Heredity Oh, yes, we’re just blameless victims of our parents and grandparents!
Menopause will slow it down even more (this, however, does not hold true for every single woman).

So how can we increase metabolism? Actually there are several ways to fight back, but first let me tell of what to NOT do.
Stay away from metabolism boosters. They work only temporarily by increasing your heart rate (not a good idea to begin with). They are expensive, and can be downright dangerous. You may remember the number of deaths and cardiopulmonary side effects of a certain metabolism booster…
Years ago one of my peers started popping metabolism boosters. He took them every day, for several months. Then one day he walked in, stating that he wasn’t feeling well. Hooked up to a heart monitor, his rate was over 180! Gave him quite the scare; he quit taking the capsules. But then he started again, and this time it was only a matter of weeks before the exact same scenario played out.
No, he did not get any sympathy from me the second time around. I just smirked and said, “And you call yourself a doctor???” (I can be mean when I want to…. ) Thank goodness the second experience gave his head a shake!
All right, now here are the safe, effective ways to boost our metabolism
Eat frequently. Six small meals a day are better than two heavy ones. Just be careful on the portions. You don’t want to end up eating 6 full meals a day!!
Do eat breakfast.
Exercise frequently. No need for exhaustion.
When the weather’s fine, go for a walk. If it’s not, head to the mall. You’ve heard of “mall-walkers”, haven’t you?
Sleep. Believe it or not, a regular sleep pattern will help your metabolism. When you’re tired because of erratic sleep, you really do not feel like exercising. In addition, you will be more tempted to snack on the wrong foods, hoping they’ll pick you up. And that's not how to increase your metabolism...
Eat lean meat. Takes longer to process, revs up your internal furnace.
Consider resistance-training exercises. Doing so can help you decrease the amount of muscle loss that occurs with aging. Remember: muscle burns more efficiently than fat!
As we have seen, how to increase metabolism is no great mystery. The above are not drastic measures. You can start by implementing just one of them for several weeks, and then move on to the next . . Painless, effective and, most importantly, safe ways to go about it.
Chances are you will not turn into a blazing cheetah, but you will positively feel better. And your skin will reflect that too!
